Chaotic brain activity.

چکیده
As demonstrated by this example fairy-tales long ago expressed what we refer to today as sensitive dependence on initial conditions. If we observe such a sensitive dependency in any given, deterministic system, we will call it 'chaos'. While the classical definition of chaos means absence of order and unpredictability, the scientific definition ofchaos is based on nonlinear mathematics.Although its principles were already established during the late 19th century by Poincare, they were not mathematically accessible until the work of Lorenz (1963). Today, chaos is defined as 'stochastic behaviour in a deterministic system', or more colloquially: Chaos is apparently lawless behaviour totally ruled by (deterministic) laws. An irregular motion is illustrated in Fig.1, in which two traces of brain activity in this case MEG are superimposed. The two traces were selected such that a large cross-correlation exists at the onset of activity. Both traces are based on the same generators, and the conditions during the two observations are very much the same. Neverthe-

Model Based Method for Determining the Minimum Embedding Dimension from Solar Activity Chaotic Time Series
Predicting future behavior of chaotic time series system is a challenging area in the literature of nonlinear systems. The prediction's accuracy of chaotic time series is extremely dependent on the model and the learning algorithm. On the other hand the cyclic solar activity as one of the natural chaotic systems has significant effects on earth, climate, satellites and space missions. Several m...
متن کاملNoise - induced first - order phase transitions in chaotic brain activity
Brain electrical activity in animals during normal behaviors has aperiodic wave forms that suggest its origin in chaotic dynamics. Attempts using low-dimensional, deterministic chaotic models to prove that pulse trains and electroencephalographic (EEG) waves are chaotic have not succeeded. The assumptions of autonomy, stationarity, and noise-free operation that are needed to define the attracto...
متن کاملToward an interpretation of dynamic neural activity in terms of chaotic dynamical systems.
Using the concepts of chaotic dynamical systems, we present an interpretation of dynamic neural activity found in cortical and subcortical areas. The discovery of chaotic itinerancy in high-dimensional dynamical systems with and without a noise term has motivated a new interpretation of this dynamic neural activity, cast in terms of the high-dimensional transitory dynamics among "exotic" attrac...
متن کاملA Complex Systems Approach to an Interpretation of Dynamic Brain Activity I: Chaotic Itinerancy Can Provide a Mathematical Basis for Information Processing in Cortical Transitory and Nonstationary Dynamics
The transitory activity of neuron assemblies has been observed in various areas of animal and human brains. We here highlight some typical transitory dynamics observed in laboratory experiments and provide a dynamical systems interpretation of such behaviors. Using the information theory of chaos, it is shown that a certain type of chaos is capable of dynamically maintaining the input informati...
متن کاملPrime numbers and spontaneous neuron activity
Logarithmic gaps have been used in order to find a periodic component of the sequence of prime numbers, hidden by a random noise (stochastic or chaotic). It is shown that multiplicative nature of the noise is the main reason for the successful application of the logarithmic gaps transforming the multiplicative noise into an additive one. A relation of this phenomenon to spontaneous neuron activ...
متن کاملPerception of Music and Dimensional Complexity of Brain Activity
The non-linear resonance hypothesis of music perception was tested in an experiment comparing a group of musically sophisticated and a group of less sophisticated subjects. The prediction that weakly chaotic music entrains less complex brain wave (EEG) oscillations at the prefrontal cortex was confirmed by using a correlational dimension algorithm. Strongly chaotic (stochastic) and periodic mus...
